C O L L A B O R A T I O N
In my work as a designer I always start by having an in depth conversation with my collaborator (be that a director or musician) and try to pick up on what they are trying to bring to the stage. Is it power, vulnerability, colour, glamour?
Then I consider the form in which they are presenting, if it is music, a script, or a dance piece. I consider the movement, the lighting, and the limitations of the piece. I take all these considerations, and I put together a visual mood board. The mood board should give a sense of the attitude, pallette, proportions, and textures I want to put into my design. I work best communicating visually, and I find that I learn a lot by the responses to the mood board. Negative and positive responses are equally valuable at this stage.
Once I have a consensus with my collaborator on the direction we are going to proceed in I do a rough illustration of the costume along with inspirational images to contextualize, and technical information on how i see it being worn. Once these are approved I do a final design illustration which encapsulates the mood, scale, colour and texture of the garment. Again this design is discussed and approved before moving into the building phase.

I am searching out artistic collaborators for whom I can provide innovative costume elements. A costume is a wonderful visual element to add to your digital performance piece. If you want to include the use of costumes in your grant I will provide the following items to include with your grant proposal:

I am interested in collaborative artistic experiences exclusively. I will be creating pieces with a value which exceed the scope of the micro grant funding, because of this the pieces created will be shared with the performer as a rental item. I want to create items with visual interest and artistic integrity.

I am not interested in re-creating existing commercial garments, or working from another artist's sketch as a technician. I am looking for the opportunity to collaborate as a creative equal on a proposed project.

Contact me if you're interested in collaborating, please include a description of your project. Share with me what role you feel the costume will play in your project, and what type of movement will be used, what the message of the piece is, and what your aesthetic influences are.I look forward to hearing your wonderful ideas, and to exploring potential projects!
